Best Practices for Managing Hybrid Cloud Environments

Session Date and Time: Day 1, March 23, 20:15pm EST (17:15pm West Coast) (30min)
Keywords: Hybrid Cloud.
Authors: Bojan Simic, Founder and Principal Analyst at TRAC Research.
Abstract: As cloud computing services are getting more traction with end-user organizations, the majority of organizations are still moving only some of their IT services into the cloud while managing other services internally. These types of hybrid environments create new management challenges as organizations need new visibility and management capabilities for ensuring the optimal use of computing resources while maintaining high levels of performance of IT services. Having full visibility into the utilization of cloud resources and being able to make educated decisions about adding and subtracting resources that are moved to the cloud allow organizations to achieve the full benefits of cloud computing from both operational and business perspectives.
This presentation will highlight the technology capabilities and management processes that organizations need to have in place in order to be effective in managing hybrid cloud environments.

Performance Testing and Analysis in a Cloud Environment: A practical approach.

Session Date and Time: Day 3, March 25, 12.30pm EST (9.30am PST) (45min)
Keywords: cloud Development and Testing.
Authors: Ben Owen, Cloud Quality Assurance Services.
Abstract: Although Performance Testing has been around for many years, the approach for Cloud Computing environments needs to be adjusted to best address the risks and concerns these new complex environments create.

In today’s ever-changing systems landscape, the one question that remains relevant is “will this system do what I need it to do and when I need it to do it?”. This presentation will delve into Performance Testing in cloud environments, giving the audience a practical overview and approach to testing these specialized environments. The initial part of this presentation will be targeted towards the decision makers and C level executives to best understand the benefits of a full Performance Tested and tuned environment. We will also explore why it is critical for the business to both evaluate and validate what they are being provided by their vendors.

The presentation will then focus on the needs of the technical system owners, investigating the technical details of cloud Performance Testing, and discussing the issues and constraints of this approach. To conclude, two real world case study examples will be presented that will illustrate a performance test in a cloud environment. Although this presentation is not intended to be tool or vendor specific, we will detail the usage of certain tools in the case study and tools sections.

Privacy in the Cloud: Client-Side Encryption and Online Key Management for Cloud-Based Collaboration.

Session Date and Time: Day 2, March 24, 13:00pm EST (10:00am West Coast) (30min)
Keywords: collaboration, Encryption, Key Management, Privacy, security.
Authors: David Sussman and Charles Chung and Qiang Lin, PhD, Bits Republic Technologies (Canada).
Abstract: Enterprises of all sizes share, and collaborate on, digital information: both within their organizations, as well as with clients and strategic partners. A variety of technologies exist to meet this need, notably local and Internet-based email servers, FTP servers, third party hosted application services, data storage systems, and peered data networks. Most organizations use a combination of these technologies, but each has limitations. Businesses inevitably find that they face compromises among flexibility, portability, functionality, affordability, and (perhaps most importantly) security.

Keywords: Load Testing, Cloud Testing tools, Business Service Management, Application Service Monitoring.
Authors: Frank Cohen, CEO of PushToTest.
Abstract: The IT world is headed towards Cloud Computing. Are you ready to move your data, applications, and services into a brand new technology platform?
Moving to the Cloud can be unnecessarily dangerous and risky. Moving to the
Cloud may be an inevitable way to power your organization's IT initiatives
in Rich Internet Applications (RIA,) Service Oriented Architecture (SOA,)
and Business Process Management (BPM.)

Your Cloud, My Cloud, Any Cloud.

Keywords: Standards of cloud computing, Ideal infrastructures of cloud computing.
Authors: Martin Schneider, SugarCRM.
Abstract: The buzz around cloud computing has reached a fever pitch. But for many proponents of cloud computing concepts, the infrastructures supporting their views is closed and fixed. But for enterprises to truly benefit from cloud computing concepts, resources must be portable, readily available and open. Learn how commercial open source, non-affiliated distributed computing providers, and the general move towards standards across the board, will enable the true potential of cloud computing.

Efficient Deployment of Predictive Analytics through Open Standards and Cloud Computing

Session Date & Time: Day 3 March 25 19:30pm EST (4.30PM pst) (45min)
Keywords: Amazon, Cloud Analytics, PMML, Predictive Analytics, SaaS.
Authors: Michael Zeller, Alex Guazzelli and Kostantinos Stathatos, Zementis, Inc.
Abstract: Open standards and cloud computing not only have the power to enable the development of new data mining applications across science and industry, but more importantly they also lower the total cost of ownership by avoiding proprietary issues and incompatibilities among systems. The Predictive Model Markup Language (PMML) standard, which allows for data mining models to be easily exchanged between analytic applications, has obtained broad industry support among commercial and open source vendors.

The evolution of the cloud.

Keywords: infrastructure, management, automation, dynamic, work-load driven.
Authors: Katherine Garlinghouse and Michael Jackson, Adaptive Computing.
Abstract: As application ecosystems in the cloud become more complex so will the need for a more diverse and flexible infrastructure to support workloads that are not well suited to virtualized systems or the typical dual socket x86 platforms and blades which make up almost 75% of "industry standard" server shipments today. The evolution of the cloud from a simple, semi-automated project space to a next generation workload driven system where complete, fully-functional compute environments will need to be dynamically created, managed, expanded and contracted as demand changes over time and finally returned to the resource pool automatically will cause a fundamental change for cloud service providers whether private or public.

Cloud Computing – the next BPM frontier

Session Date and Time: Day 2, March 24 15:15 EST (45 min.)
Keywords: BPM, enterprise cloud computing, IT, SaaS, adoption landscape.
Authors: Rick Carnal and Todd Lane, Appregatta Technologies.
Abstract: The movement from traditional on-premises software to cloud-based applications represents a fundamental shift at the enterprise level. The overall adoption of SaaS/cloud technologies has been gaining significant traction over the past few years. This trend, which has been fueled by early wins in key business functions including CRM, ERP, manufacturing/supply chain, and marketing, is helping to form a new business process management (BPM) paradigm that is changing “pure-play” solutions for the better. The market for BPM is growing rapidly, and IDC forecasts that the BPM market will reach $3 billion in 2013. “Pure-play” SaaS BPM companies are few and far between, and the broader landscape is changing rapidly as the power vendors maneuver to take advantage of the shift. Amidst the evolving market, customers have legitimate questions about BPM adoption and advances in service-oriented architecture (SOA) solutions. What are the main BPM cloud computing benefits? When will (or should) cloud replace, co-exist with, or operate independently from the secure IT infrastructure? While nobody has definitive answers to the many questions surrounding BPM and the shift to the cloud, an understanding of its evolution and observations about the current state of the market can help customers begin to navigate the BPM frontier.

New SaaS Business Models for Success.

Session Date and Time: Day 1, March 23, 3.15pm EST (12.15pm pst) - (45min)
Keywords: Business model, business, enterprise cloud computing, management, SaaS, Sales.
Authors: Kenneth Marshall and Todd Lane, Appregatta Technologies.
Abstract: This session will present ideas on new business models that independent software vendors can implement to succeed in the increasingly commoditized cloud-computing market. As the enterprise software landscape begins its shift from on-premises to on-demand, the business models of SaaS vendors need to change to reflect the dramatically different economics of the industry. Lower price points and margins, lower barriers to market, and much faster speed to market and quality of software from competitors mean that independent software vendors must scale their operations and delivery capabilities to unprecedented levels in order to succeed. Participants will take away ideas that they can apply to their organizations to succeed in SaaS.
