Managing Private and Hybrid Clouds For Data Storage

Keywords: Hybrid Clouds, private clouds .
Authors: Mark Carlson, Sun Microsystems, Inc. and Marty Foltyn, SNIA Cloud Storage Initiative.
Abstract: Many organizations, driven by the opportunities for significant cost-savings, are considering cloud computing and cloud storage solutions, which take advantage of Web-based technologies to allow scalable, virtualized IT resources to be provided as a service over the network. Not a new technology in itself, cloud computing is a new business model wrapped around existing technologies, such as server virtualization, to make the use of information technology resources more efficient.

Enterprise Private Cloud Computing

Keywords: Enterprise, iaas, NETWORKS, PaaS, private clouds.
Authors: Geoff Brown, m2mi.
Abstract: Silicon Valley, NASA based Machine-To-Machine Intelligence (m2mi) Corporation an early entrant in Cloud Computing, present the latest intelligence from the realm of Enterprise Private Cloud Computing.

Eucalyptus: The Open Source Infrastructure for Cloud Computing

Session Date and Time: Day 3, March 25, 12:30pm EST (9:30AM pst) (45min)
Keywords: open source, eucalyptus, private cloud, hybrid cloud.
Authors: Matt Reid, Eucalyptus.
Abstract: We will present Eucalyptus -- Elastic Utility Computing Architecture for Linking Your Programs to Useful Systems -- an open source software infrastructure that implements IaaS-style cloud computing. The goal of Eucalyptus is to allow sites with existing clusters and server infrastructure to host an elastic computing service that is interface-compatible with Amazon's AWS, but can also support multiple interfaces such as Google's AppEngine and the Sun Cloud open API.

What We Learned the Hard Way: Top 10 Private Cloud Best Practices and Pitfalls.

Session Time: Day 2, March 24, 16:00pm EST (13.00pm West Coast) (1hr)
Keywords: private cloud, internal cloud, successful cloud computing, Surgient, Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS).
Authors: Dave Malcolm and Julie Pham, Surgient.
Abstract:
Based on experience garnered from 150+ private cloud implementations, this session will provide attendees with a set of hard-earned lessons-learned. These are illustrated by a number of project-based anecdotes, including building a future-proof cloud and re-engineering existing IT service delivery processes. Additionally, the session will describe actionable strategies for avoiding the most common (and expensive) private cloud pitfalls, including mismanaging user expectations and underestimating platform growth.

Dave Malcolm, Chief Technology Officer, Surgient
With 20+ years of experience in high tech, Malcolm is responsible for software development, product management, and datacenter operations for Surgient's products and hosted solutions. His team is responsible for multiple granted patents on cloud technology and more than 150 successful private cloud deployments. Dave graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a bachelor's degree in computer science.

How to Roll Your Own Cloud in 30 Days or Less

Keywords: private clouds, internal clouds, hypervisor, cloud computing, infrastructure clouds
Authors: Sheng Liang, VMOps.
Abstract: The benefits of private clouds are fairly well documented, but at the end of the day, the best way to gauge the value of this computing model within an enterprise is to jump in and start small. However, starting small doesn’t mean sacrificing functionality like elasticity, self service, programmatic access, and automation. In this session, technology visionary and creator of the Java Virtual Machine at Sun Microsystems, Sheng Liang, will discuss how to set-up a small private cloud using commodity infrastructure. Mr. Sheng will present the challenges and potential pitfalls associated with rolling your own cloud. He will explain how to evaluate cloud software platforms, and select the right servers, storage, hypervisor, and networking infrastructure.

The Context-Aware Cloud

Keywords: Mobility, Mesh, Public Cloud, Private Cloud, PaaS.
Authors: Charlton Barreto, Intel.
Abstract: Emerging cloud computing models put the user at the center of their "digital world" by creating a "mesh" of devices, data and applications. The goal is to make the user experience seamless by allowing individuals to access and share their applications and data on any of their devices, anytime, anywhere. This evolution is compelling when one considers the increasing ratio of devices to users, and how these capabilities are being extended from consumer markets to the enterprise.
Most significant is the emergence of the "any device, any where" application experience, where an application is installed into the Cloud, becomes available across devices, is synchronized along with its data according to policy and device capabilities, and is executed in a context-aware manner that allows local or remote execution of some or all of its parts depending on the capabilities of the client device.

How Cloud Transforms Models, Architectures and Usage for Business and IT

Session Date & Time: Day 2, March 24, 20:30pm EST (17.30PM West Coast) –(45min)
Keywords: Architectures, Models, Public Cloud, Private Cloud, Business
Authors: Charlton Barreto, Intel
cloud computing conference 2010
Abstract: Cloud Computing is rapidly changing the face of business and computing, through its value proposition and transformation of models, architectures and usage. This session covers these disruptions and changes of business models, the business value they engender, and the areas for the new Cloud Operating Environment required for their success. Included is a discussion of Public and Private Cloud, what they represent to consumers, small-medium business and the enterprise, and how they enable each market to achieve the full flexibility and benefits of Cloud. The session will focus on various examples in the consumer, small-medium business, and enterprise markets; and the architectural transformational efforts these organisations employ to harness the power of cloud, deliver new business performance, and reduce Total Cost of Ownership.
