A Billion Served

Session Date & Time: Day 3, March 25, 18:30pm EST (13:30 pm PST) (1 hour)
Keywords: Cloud Testing.
Authors: Jurrie van den Breekel, Spirent .
cloud computing conference 2010Abstract: The cloud is the new “killer” service to bring service providers and enterprises into the age of network services capable of infinite scale. As an example, a mere 5,000 servers with many cloud services could feasibly serve one billion users or end devices. The idea of services at this scale is now possible with multi-core processing, virtualization and high speed Ethernet, but even today the mix of implementing these technologies requires careful considerations in network infrastructure design. This presentation covers the challenges of the network infrastructure enabling cloud services at infinite scale.

Panel Topic: Cloud-scale ERP on-demand supporting 500,000 users with SAP, T-Systems, and NetApp

Session Date and Time: Day 3, March 25, 17:30pm EST (14:30PM West Coast) (1 hour)
Keywords: ERP, Cloud.
Panelists: Sanjog Gad, SVP oCTO at SAP, Greg Smith, VP North America at T-Systems, Val Bercovici, VP oCTO at NetApp, George Gilbert, TechAlpha (Moderator).
Description SAP, T-Systems, and NetApp are collaborating on a proposal for a panel at CloudSlam focused on the following themes:

  • How to extend the SAP installed base with the new technology and economics of on-demand applications at the "edge"
  • How SAP is rebuilding under the covers in order to minimize customer disruption for on-demand deployment but while still delivering the scale and scope that core mission-critical systems demand
  • How a service provider like T-Systems can preserve existing applications but leverage the TCO and economic advantages of on-demand delivery - this part of the panel will go into some of the trade-offs behind how T-Systems leveraged its scale to build management technologies to support secure multi-tenancy that many on-demand vendors are also working on but that in this case works on existing SAP systems.
  • How a service provider platform can build higher level functionality and leverage better economics by building on specialized infrastructure - in this case NetApp. This part of the panel will explain the trade-offs between the integrated systems that Cisco/EMC and HP are building and the specialized systems that are differentiated by their management functionality and enable customers to deliver secure multi-tenancy.

Best Practices for Managing Hybrid Cloud Environments

Session Date and Time: Day 1, March 23, 20:15pm EST (17:15pm West Coast) (30min)
Keywords: Hybrid Cloud.
Authors: Bojan Simic, Founder and Principal Analyst at TRAC Research.
Abstract: As cloud computing services are getting more traction with end-user organizations, the majority of organizations are still moving only some of their IT services into the cloud while managing other services internally. These types of hybrid environments create new management challenges as organizations need new visibility and management capabilities for ensuring the optimal use of computing resources while maintaining high levels of performance of IT services. Having full visibility into the utilization of cloud resources and being able to make educated decisions about adding and subtracting resources that are moved to the cloud allow organizations to achieve the full benefits of cloud computing from both operational and business perspectives.
This presentation will highlight the technology capabilities and management processes that organizations need to have in place in order to be effective in managing hybrid cloud environments.

Windows-based IaaS: Lessons in the Cloud - The Recovery.Gov Story

Session Date and Time: Day 1, March 23, 18.45pm EST (15.45pm West Coast) (45min)
Keywords: windows, iaas.
Authors: Erren Lester, Director of Product Management, Synteractive, Inc.
Abstract: In this session, we will tell the story of how a small, highly motivated team of people leveraged the cloud to develop the highly available, highly performing, data driven site called http://www.recovery.gov. Recovery.Gov is the site used to track the $800B+ stimulus spending aimed at creating or saving jobs during the economic crisis. The redesign, which focused on making detailed recipient data transparent all the way down to the state and local government, was under the supervision of Vice Pres. Joe Biden and had a successful release to the public in only 10 weeks. That's right, 10 weeks from inception to development to deployment of a Microsoft .NET based solution running on the Amazon cloud. And to make it even more interesting, we should add that the entire site is running on SharePoint 2007.

The overall theme of this session will be focused on how to effectively use public IaaS clouds such as Amazon to deliver a best of class Windows-based solution. Many of these lessons learned led to the creation of CloudAdvantage.

How to Solve For Cloud Based Adoption Through Master Data Management

Session Date and Time: Day 3, March 25, 13:15pm EST (10.15AM West Coast)- (45min)
Keywords: master data management, integration roadmap
Authors: Mark Cowan, First Spike (Canada).
Abstract: Data duplication and mapping is hard in any scenario. What data do you need, what is available and how does it map into the new system?

Compromised data leads to non-adoption, out of system data enrichment and blind decision making in many organizations.

Core to deploying and integrating any cloud based application with on-premise solutions is the successful interplay between master data in those systems.

Master data such as client identifiers, vendor records, company and location information in cloud based applications suffer from the same challenges as on premise data sets in that data is duplicated but maintained separately. This contributes directly to quality issues associated with the aging rate of data and its fracturing across multiple systems. This acts as barrier to change and solution adoption.

In this discussion we will walk through practical roadmap development practices showing how to manage master data discussions in cloud based scenarios.

This will be done through an approach framework designed to give the participant practical tools and skills to navigate this discussion.

Additionally this discussion will show using cloud based master data feeds that data duplication, validation and proliferation can be managed effectively to the overall improvement of data driven decision scenarios.

cloud computing conference 2010Mark Cowan has initiated the data management discussion within many organizations spanning the capital markets, defense, government, insurance, retail and manufacturing. Mark is a recognized expert in system design, integration and business enablement.

Privacy in the Cloud: Client-Side Encryption and Online Key Management for Cloud-Based Collaboration.

Session Date and Time: Day 2, March 24, 13:00pm EST (10:00am West Coast) (30min)
Keywords: collaboration, Encryption, Key Management, Privacy, security.
Authors: David Sussman and Charles Chung and Qiang Lin, PhD, Bits Republic Technologies (Canada).
Abstract: Enterprises of all sizes share, and collaborate on, digital information: both within their organizations, as well as with clients and strategic partners. A variety of technologies exist to meet this need, notably local and Internet-based email servers, FTP servers, third party hosted application services, data storage systems, and peered data networks. Most organizations use a combination of these technologies, but each has limitations. Businesses inevitably find that they face compromises among flexibility, portability, functionality, affordability, and (perhaps most importantly) security.

Is WAN Optimization Still Relevant in a Cloudy World?

Session Date: March 24, 2010
Session Time: 11.15am EST (8.15am PST)
Keywords: WAN, private clouds, Networking, Latency.
Authors: Apurva Dave, Vice President Product Marketing and Alliances, Riverbed Technology.
Abstract: Poor application performance due to WAN latency has negatively impacted distributed enterprises and organizations for years. Now this same issue threatens companies who are moving to create private, public or hybrid cloud computing networks. As companies determine which applications are appropriate to run in the cloud, WAN optimization can help -- not only in breaking performance bottlenecks, but also in reducing the number of applications that would otherwise need to be rewritten. WAN optimization capabilities are being extended to address a broad range of private and public cloud computing challenges. The speaker will examine virtual WAN optimization and advancements in branch office optimization that will enable, and further drive, dependence on cloud computing.
