How to Control Costs in the Cloud: Strategies and Tactics for Smarter Spending

Session Date & Time: Day 3, March 25, 7:30pm EST (4:30 pm PST) (45 min)
Keywords: Cloud Costs.
Authors:Rob Bernshteyn, CEO at Coupa.
Abstract:cloud computing conference 2010 No organization can afford to waste dollars on purchases that do not support immediate business needs. That’s partly why Cloud Computing is having such a big moment, right? But it’s not just a moment. It’s not just a trend. This a game changer, and the changes will endure.

During this session, Coupa CEO Rob Bernshteyn will discuss the implications of the Cloud on company business models, processes, and cultures.

The Cloud -> Business Models

  • Enterprise use of cloud infrastructure services (such as Amazon’s) has established a “new normal” of enormous computational power being employed on a pay-as-you-go basis — with many compelling examples of extraordinary projects that are being carried out with startling speed at astonishingly little cost.
  • Coupa is also modeled on an on-demand model so that customers can save on up-front costs and maintenance

The Cloud -> Processes

  • New real-time Cloud applications, platform, and infrastructures mean that when a market zigs, customers won't have to wait weeks or months for their software to zag
  • In Coupa’s case, the Cloud provides feature benefits like instant visibility into spend, alerts to reject unnecessary purchases before they happen, and easy-to-change workflows, and real-time benchmarking

The Cloud -> Culture

  • Systems built on archaic technologies that are difficult to use, are going to turn off the end users, and adoption will decrease. The Cloud supports more innovative, easy-to-use platforms

Leveraging the Value of Big Data in the Cloud

Session Date & Time: Day 2, March 24, 11:15am EST (8:15 am PST) (45 minutes)
Keywords: Big Data in Cloud.
Authors: Dr. Reichental, PricewaterhouseCoopers.
Abstract: cloud computing conference 2010The volume of data being created and made accessible via the cloud by individuals and enterprises is rising exponentially. Whether by intent, or as an unintended consequence of our activities, our digital world is generating a data footprint unprecedented in magnitude. We call this emerging phenomenon big data. While big data presents a number of challenges related to such areas as data management and privacy, it clearly introduces a whole new set of opportunities for individuals and organizations. Massive stores of data, and here's the key: openly accessible, enables completely new innovation. Harvesting this data can result in formerly unanswerable questions to get answered; it may enable completely new questions to be asked; and re-purposing the data can create completely new value.

Big data is quickly becoming a boon for decision-makers in any capacity. Provide open-access to your data to your staff or the marketplace, and they may present it back to you in ways that boost your business or build new opportunities. Governments all over the world are making available their massive data warehouses in standard formats via the cloud that are empowering citizens to build new applications and apply new solutions to everything from crime fighting to resource allocation. This presentation is a primer into this emerging and valuable space. It will cover a thorough explanation of big data, why it matters, where it is headed, and the opportunity for organizations. While it will focus on the positives of big data, it will touch on some of the implicit risks and challenges.

Financial Management Services Cloud

Date: Day 3, March 25, 19:30 EST (45 min)
Keywords: federal financial management, cloud financial management, financial transparency, financial compliance, Enterprise Share Service Provider
Abstract:
With the new administration there is plenty of discussion around accountability, compliance and financial responsibility, but few agencies have been able to point to public successes.

Government transformation, critically needed in financial management, can be implemented within federal agencies with the right solution. Utilizing tools such as a commercial Shared Service Provider for government agencies in a cloud computing-based solution will allow an agency to drive efficiencies in financial management and compliance, with a seamless transition from an existing environment to a new solution. Ultimately, the solution will enable an agency to focus on its core mission.

We can provide a case study on how a cloud, SSP-based financial management solution was implemented with the Department of Labor in just 18 months; with no disruption of work and under a strategic Change Management focus.

Finance in a Cloud

Session Date and Time: Day 1, March 23, 6:45pm EST (3.15pm West Coast)- (45min)
Keywords: Finance.
Authors: cloud computingRobert Kugel, VP & Global Research Director, Ventana Research.
Abstract: Cloud computing is an important innovation that will help finance organizations save time and money while improving their strategic value to the company. It can deliver new capabilities to improve operational efficiency. The cloud makes it possible to interact with customers and collaborate with suppliers or partners. For companies that cannot or do not want to support on-premises software, cloud computing can substantially broaden the scope of available computing resources, and for many midsize and smaller companies the cloud for the first time makes available large company capabilities. Robert Kugel, SVP and Global Research Director of business research at business research and advisory services firm Ventana Research, summarizes the current landscape of available financial applications as services in the cloud and explores what companies can achieve with them, the risks in cloud computing and how best to address them.

Abstract: Cloud computing has generated lot of interest and tractions in recent times. Cloud computing is an emerging computing paradigm where data and applications reside in the cyberspace, it allowing users to access them through any web-connected device [1] be it fixed or mobile. Cloud can be private cloud or public cloud. Private cloud will be implemented by enterprises for their own private use. This will mainly be to reduce the cost and have a centralized management of the data. At a later time a private cloud will also be commissioned to get carbon credit. Private cloud will be an extension of the data centre within the control of the enterprise; in private cloud an enterprise can implement a security policy and control people and hardware resource with respect to privacy, security, and access. However, the cloud in this paper refers to public cloud where data, processor, or applications are running in the public cloud, the user does not have knowledge of where the data is stored, and how is it transmitted.
